Black Lives Matter Statement

CommUNITY Barnet shares the deep sense of sadness and anger being expressed across the world about the brutal murder of Mr George Floyd and thousands of other black people who have been unjustly treated in the United States, internationally and in this country. We want to publicly express our solidarity and support with everyone impacted by racism and stand with all those speaking out and moving to end discrimination. Our staff, volunteers, campaigners, charity partners and clients will be personally affected by racism. This is unacceptable. We all have the responsibility to be part of making positive changes in society. It is past time to address and challenge overt and covert racist attitudes and behaviour within our families, communities and workplaces.

We are an organisation that aims to hold equality and inclusion at our core. At CommUNITY Barnet, we are proud of our history of working with under-represented communities and groups, many of whom are from BAME communities. Engaging with, and supporting, residents in all the areas of London we work in is a key and enduring element of our work. We will continue and further our efforts to listen to the voices of all under-represented sections of society and be an active agent for positive change in attitude and policy, both locally and nationally.

We know we do not always get this right. And we know we could and should be doing more – both internally within our charity and externally within our London communities. Our commitment to you is to listen, learn and work together to make change. To be part of the conversations happening in our sector. To show strong public support for those standing against racism; and to take action. The Black Lives Matter movement has acted as a catalyst and a timely reminder about what we can be doing at CommUNITY Barnet to  better listen to and  support our staff and improve the conversation internally, as well as what more we can do as an organisation more widely. We have outlined to our staff and volunteers some of the support that we plan to offer and are working with them around next steps. We welcome the input of our community partners and friends in developing useful and relevant actions. We would like to thank everyone in our community who has raised this issue already. We welcome thoughts from everybody who wishes to share them as we go forward. We all have a role in bringing about change.
