Did you know that only 1% of the Black population in the UK are blood donors?

Did you also know that the NHS is running critically low on blood donation from Black donors? Due to pressures from COVID-19 figures show that approximately 16,000 more blood donors are needed to meet the demand for those suffering from Sickle Cell Disease that requires life-saving transfusion.

We at Community Barnet have partnered with the NHS to engage with Black communities in Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Haringey, Islington, Hackney & Waltham Forest to raise awareness of the importance of blood donation.

Increasing the number of donors can help tackle health inequalities by combatting prevalent diseases within the community.

We have been hosting virtual and drop-in sessions to hear from members of the Black community in Barnet about their experiences and answer any questions.

You can watch highlights from our virtual event in August where we spoke about the importance of blood donation as well as:

·  What blood donation is and isn’t

·  What is your blood type and how do you find this out

·  Speaking with someone with personal experience with blood donation & sickle cell

We are planning to host more spaces for discussion this autumn, details of which will be posted here and on our social media.
